Get ready for Spring and get inspired to enjoy the boardwalk in Belmar NJ

Scott Cutshall, 38 years old, was not sure if he'd live to see 40. He wore size XXXXXXXXXXL pants and could not tie his own shoes. He could walk only nine steps at a time. Breathing was sometimes difficult. A doctor said he would be dead in six months.

The rebirth of Scott Cutshall began Thanksgiving day 2005, a bowl of vegetable soup for breakfast kicking off a new life where nothing would be the same. Cutshall, living in Jersey City at the time, weighed 501 pounds. He was having breakfast. And then he was getting ready to go on a bike ride.

He rode 1.9 miles that day, rolling through neighborhoods, biking on the street, stopping to rest four or five times to sit on a curb. Head down. Panting. Hot even in November.

The ride of less than 2 miles took Cutshall three hours to complete. But the wheels were turning. His body was in motion. The journey had begun.

another review of Mack's chicken shack in Belmar NJ

Fried chicken has always been like a hot booty call: ready and satisfying any time I had the urge, but bad for me and probably more dangerous and full of chemicals than I’d like to admit. This is why my first taste of the healthier Broaster Chicken was the culinary equivalent of finding Jesus in a tortilla. Questions came flooding down the previously frozen glacier of my head: Where has this been all my life? Why didn’t anyone tell me about this? Is this all a dream?

Thankfully, I wasn’t in a bad 80’s sitcom and the chicken was in fact real. Broasted chicken, as I am told by their website, is pressure-cooked with some secret method using a secret marinade which cuts the fat nearly in half while retaining the meat’s moisture. I still don’t understand how they got the word “broasted” from a method of pressure frying, but I’ve gone far beyond the point of caring.

If I sound like a corporate shill, it’s because I want to run into every KFC and start violently shaking people by their shirts as I screamed obscenities at them. KFC is no doubt delicious, but it pales in comparison to this magical chicken that I consumed. The crispy and light skin was topped with delectable cajun spices. The best part is that a patting with a napkin yielded no grease spots. If I ever saw a dieter throwing the skin away, I would almost certainly have to run and tackle the person.

Inside the first piece was the juiciest breast meat ever, which seems almost oxymoronic by typical fried chicken standards. The other piece of chicken was the best use of a thigh since gymnast Shawn Johnson used her running back-like legs to win gold during the Olympics.

Sold in select delis and restaurants around the nation, I’m assuming that the quality of Genuine Mack's Chicken Shack in Belmar may vary. If done right, as with this Huckleberry’s location in Orange County, it should come to you cooked to order with a Korean lady warning you that the chicken is still hot. She will offer you hot sauce, but you decline, already anticipating the natural flavors of this miracle bird.

It is at this point that you will embrace the majesty of your lips caressing the chicken. And in this moment of ecstasy you will think of me. This will probably be very confusing for you until you take your next bite and go on for the rest of the meal without a care in the world.

Item: Mack's Chicken Shack
Price: $5.99 (2-piece combo)
Purchased at: Matisse new chicken takeout window Macks chicken shack
Rating: 10 out of 10
Pros: Less fat than regular fried chicken. Breast meat is actually very moist. Skin is not greasy at all and well-flavored with cajun seasonings. Skin is light yet very crispy.
Cons: Located on the Belmar Boardwalk, might be tough to park once summer arrives . Thinking of me during your moment of ecstasy.

Bruce Springsteen rehearses in Asbury Park

Bruce Springsteen rehearses in Asbury Park

Courtesy of Caitlin WalshBruce Springsteen leaves Asbury Park's Paramount Theatre on Thursday after rehearsing with his E Street Band.

Bruce Springsteen and most of the E Street Band rehearsed Wednesday and Thursday for their upcoming "Working On a Dream" world tour at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park. Keeping with tradition, Springsteen has rehearsed for every one of his tours since 1999's Reunion Tour in Asbury Park.

Today, most of the E Streeters arrived after noon.
Steve Van Zandt drove in and stopped and signed autographs and took pictures with the dozen or so fans waiting. Steven also signed briefly on his way out today.
Bruce and wife Patti Scialfa arrived together at 12:50 p.m. They also had a dog with them, a German Shepherd.
As Bruce and Patti drove up the ramp, they both waved and smiled to the about 20 fans waiting, they did not stop though.

The music started shortly after:

Songs rehearsed today were:

1. Good Eye
Bruce worked on the bullet mic and the harmonica parts a lot. At one point he even threw a line in there from "A Night with the Jersey Devil"
"I was born 13th child, 'neath the 13th moon."
He did not play any more of the song though.
After about 20 minutes of tinkering about with it, they played it in full.

2. Life Itself
Real nice guitar work. They worked through different parts of the song a few times. I would assume that Bruce and Nils are the standouts on guitar here. Maybe Steven too.

3. Kingdom of Days
This was the "Wow!" song of the day. Some pedal steel at the start. You could hear Patti on the backup vocals.
This is going to sound great live. At the end of the song, Bruce and Patti do a duet and as one fan today said "That was beautiful."
They played it three times. This is my favorite song on the new album and it was great hearing it performed.

4. Surprise, Surprise.
They played it twice. Sounded pretty much like the album.

They took a 20-minute or so break before coming back with

5. Outlaw Pete
Started up with a pedal-steel sounding instrument. Bruce worked on a few parts of it and then they played it twice.
Sounded good. Will be powerful in concert.

6. This Life
They worked on the end "vocalizing" parts a few times. The parts I think sound like the Partridge Family. Others have said The Turtles.

That was it for the day.
Music ended around 4 p.m.

Steven came out first and signed autographs for a few people.

Bruce and Patti left together at about 4:25 p.m.
They didn't stop to sign autographs but Bruce did drive slowly down the ramp and he waved and pointed to the about 30 fans waiting. A woman had two dogs on Patti's side of the car and she rolled down the window to see them.

Max Weinberg's son, Jay, was at rehearsals for a second straight day today. Fans wonder if could very well be Max's replacement when Max can't make it to shows due to his commitments with Conan O'Brien starting in June..

Clarence Clemons was not at rehearsals the past two days but no worries, word has it "The Big Man" will be joining the band shortly.

Songs worked on at Wednesday's rehearsal were:
1. Outlaw Pete. 2. My Lucky Day. 3. Working on a Dream 4. What Love Can Do and 5. This Life.Abram's Bridge

Earlier last call in Pt. Beach? as towns try to fix budget gaps

Earlier last call in Pt. Beach?

By MATTHEW McGRATH
TOMS RIVER BUREAU

Mayor Vincent R. Barrella says he will recommend a requirement that bars close three hours earlier — at 11 p.m. — because police and public works jobs will need to be eliminated if a controversial boroughwide expansion of paid parking is not approved by March 31.

At the Borough Council meeting Tuesday night, Barrella accused "some businesses making money" here as a drain on police and public works services.

"We have a culture of corporate welfare in this town," Barrella said. "Those people are in this room, and until they want to come to the table to make (a partnership with the borough) work, the taxpayers will continue to see tax increases to support those businesses in this town."

The mayor's suggestion to cut bar hours was met with laughter from the standing-room-only crowd of more than 100 people who spilled out of the small courtroom into the hallway at borough hall.

"I am shocked at the venom the mayor expressed toward the boardwalk businesses," Ed McGlynn, attorney for Jenkinson's, said following the Borough Council meeting. "I am really perplexed by the attack on the major industry, largest employer and largest taxpayer in town."

Jenkinson's owns large portion of the beach, nightclubs, boardwalk amusements and an aquarium. Other portions of the beach and the boardwalk also are privately owned. The boardwalk businesses provide their own private security and remove trash from the boardwalk at its expense, McGlynn said.

If the parking plan is not implemented, the cut in bar hours would be needed because town employees would need to be laid off or furloughed because of an estimated $1.5 million budget shortfall created by state caps on tax collection and overall spending, Barrella said.

The cut in bar hours would reduce the need for police services. At least six full-time officers would have to be laid off to balance the budget, Barrella said.

The budget caps are causing similar problems throughout the Jersey Shore.

Borough officials estimated the expanded paid parking will generate at least $1 million by charging visitors $1.50 per hour to park on every borough street. Payments would be made over the phone with a credit card.

More than $1.44 million was collected in 2007 from parking meters and kiosks. There are some free lots that would remain free.

"This is class discrimination, not everyone has cell phones and credit cards," said Trish Mollema of Spotswood, who is a summer resident here. "It will not stop people from coming, it will stop poor people from coming here."

Barrella said, "Parking is the only way we can raise money in this town."

However, some council members said the plan is being rushed. "I'm not saying this is a bad idea, it does have some merit," Councilman John Dixon said. "This is not how this should be done. It's being rushed and its just going to turn into a disaster as far as I'm concerned."

After a 90-minute debate about the proposal, the council postponed further discussion of its parking proposal until a meeting scheduled for March 10.

Earlier Tuesday, the New Jersey Association of Realtors denounced the parking plan.

"It's baffling as to why a town that thrives off of tourism would pursue a proposal that makes it more expensive for families to vacation there," Jarrod C. Grasso, association vice president, said in a statement. "In this economy when many people are looking to scale back their travel plans, Point Pleasant Beach should look to position itself as an affordable family-friendly vacation destination."
