Sunday Brunch at Matisse the best Brunch at the shore

Matisse the best Brunch at the shore

This place Matisse in Belmar knocked my socks off! The Ocean views and first class Chefs really warms the atmosphere. We calledthere for my Mom's milestone birthday and reserved our table The hostess confirmed our reservation thanking us for choosing Matisse for our celebration. Nice touch. The food was fabulous, especially the stuffed French Toast, arugula salad and the scallops. Our entire table enjoyed the no rush atmosphere of Matisse and the views of the Belmar beach from our table were to die for - Tommy Wilson

Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Southside Johnny entertained the crowd at Count Basie Theatre on Monday night

RED BANK — Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Southside Johnny entertained the crowd at Count Basie Theatre on Monday night with a mix of Christmas standards and songs from their own vast catalog of hits.

Bon Jovi introduced Springsteen, who was not on the list of scheduled performers, to the crowd by saying, "I've got someone special up here and it ain't Santa Claus."

Springsteen took the stage, providing backing vocals and guitar solos for "Run Rudolph Run."

Later, Springsteen took center stage with back-to-back performances of "Merry Christmas, Baby" and "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town."

The fourth annual all-star Hope Concert, organized by guitarist Bobby Bandiera, raised more than $250,000 for the Parker Family Health Center here. Audience members also brought more than 10,000 pounds of food donations for the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties

SALTWATER Inshore Fishing

SALTWATER Inshore Fishing

Capt. Butch Egerter of the Dauntless reported his recent trips have been dominated by ling, tog and cod. Weather problems, though, have limited his sailing time this past week.

Capt. Jim Eliot of the Miss Belmar Princess said the boat is done with its stripers bass fishing for the year and will start sailing for mackerel this weekend. Another boat captain, Chris Heuth of the Mohawk, said the bottom fishing has been good. Heuth said tog fishing has been good this month, so much so that the last two trips left the dock early with a full compliment of anglers, and Tuesday's trip had an 11-pound pool fish.

Madoff Fund Operator De La Villehuchet Found Dead

Madoff Fund Operator De La Villehuchet Found Dead (Update1)

Email | Print | A A A

By Saijel Kishan and Katherine Burton

Dec. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Thierry Magon de La Villehuchet, who ran a fund that invested with Bernard Madoff, was found dead at his office today in an apparent suicide, according to a police officer at the scene.

De la Villehuchet, 65, was a co-founder and chief executive officer of Access International Advisors, according to a marketing document. Access, based in New York, invested $1.4 billion with Madoff, who was arrested on Dec. 11 for allegedly running a $50 billion Ponzi scheme.

Police were called to the Madison Avenue office about 7:30 a.m., said New York Police spokeswoman Doris Otero. She declined to provide a cause of death.

Before founding Access in 1994 with Patrick Littaye, de La Villehuchet was chairman and CEO of Credit Lyonnais Securities USA, the U.S. investment banking arm of the French bank, according to Access marketing documents. Prior to joining Credit Lyonnais in 1987, he ran Interfinance, an international broker firm specializing in French, Belgian and Italian stock markets that he founded in 1983.

Access’s LUXALPHA SICAV-American Selection invested solely with Madoff. Access said last week that it was working with lawyers to assess the situation.

Clients of Madoff had at least $36 billion with his firm, according to a Bloomberg tally that may include some double counting. Before his arrest, Madoff, 70, confessed to employees that his “giant Ponzi scheme” may have cost as much as $50 billion, according to an FBI complaint.

His misconduct may have stretched back to at least the 1970s, two people familiar with the government’s inquiry of Madoff said last week. Madoff is now under house arrest at his New York apartment.

Yanks go cheap with the 2 games in April

Yanks offer 1923 prices for exhibitions for the 2009 Home opener
Bleacher seats 25 cents; grandstand $1.10 for games vs. Cubs
By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com

NEW YORK , The Home that Ruth built goes on the cheap-- The exterior of the new Yankee Stadium rising across 161st Street was designed to incorporate many of the aspects that made the original 1923 version so distinctive, showcasing the tall vaulted arches and the Gate 4 home-plate entrance.
For its first two games, visitors walking into the new Yankee Stadium will also be invited to pay homage to the building's predecessor in another special way -- attending a ballgame by trading a few coins for a ticket.

The Yankees announced Tuesday plans to roll back ticket prices to 1923 in a "Turn Back the Clock" promotion. Fans will be able to attend the April 3 and 4 exhibitions against the Chicago Cubs at the same prices it would have cost to be present for the Stadium's first game.

in the mid 1980;s main box tickets were jeust $14.50 each and now they ar over $300 per ticket for some of the best field box seating..

Full-season ticket licensees will receive complimentary tickets for the first exhibition games. Partial-plan holders will receive the first opportunity to purchase tickets thereafter, via a pre-sale (restrictions apply).

"To express our gratitude toward our full-season ticket licensees, we are offering tickets for these two exhibition games at no cost to them," said Yankees chief operating officer Lonn Trost.

"The balance of tickets will be sold first to our partial-plan holders, then to the general public, at vastly reduced rates compared to the regular season. Using such a pricing model for these games allows us to thank our fans for their continued loyalty and introduce them to baseball's new grand cathedral."

The street hustler will be selling tickets for the rainy April games at the same price!

For the inaugural exhibition contests, Bleacher tickets will be priced at 25 cents, and Grandstand tickets will be priced at $1.10 -- the same prices they were when Babe Ruth christened the new building on April 18, 1923, slugging a third-inning home run off Boston's Howard Ehmke.

The Yankees said tickets on the Terrace Level will cost between $20 and $35, tickets on the Main Level will be between $20 and $45, and tickets on the Field Level will range from $45 to $50.

Individual-game ticket prices will not exceed $50 for either game, the club said. Remaining tickets, subject to availability, will go on sale to the general public at a date to be determined in the future.

Lobster prices fall as the economy suffers

Lobster prices fall as the economy suffers
KIRK MOORE
Published: 12.16.2008
POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. - Cheaper than a pack of hot dogs - that's how some Maine fishermen describe the prices they are getting for lobster, at $2.40 to $2.60 a pound, down from a $10 high in spring 2007.
"Now it's getting to the point where your average consumer can afford to buy them," said John Godwin of Point Lobster Co. in Point Pleasant Beach as he looked over 10,000 pounds of fresh-caught New Jersey lobsters crawling in the company's indoor lobster pound. "If the Canadians get a couple weeks of good fishing, it's going to keep the price low. With their equipment, they can go fishing in weather when our boats would be tied up."
New Jersey lobstermen are getting slightly better prices at $3 to $3.25 a pound in recent days, but the consumer pullback in spending is affecting seafood businesses across the board.
On the finfish side of the business, fisherman John Cole said, "monk tails (monkfish) are worth a little money. But everything's depressed. People aren't going out to eat."
Furthermore, increased government regulation over the years has taken away fishermen's traditional flexibility to switch between species, Cole said.
Lobster deflation started with the bank panic in Iceland. By early October, the meltdown in credit reached Canadian seafood processors, who usually buy and freeze between 50 percent and 70 percent of Maine-caught lobsters. It turned out that processors got much of their financing from Icelandic banks, which have much experience in the seafood business but were early victims of the crunch, said Peter McAleney, owner of New Meadows Lobster in Portland, Maine.
Without their usual credit lines, processors could not buy lobster, and the supply chain backed up immediately, McAleney said.
"In a matter of a just a couple of hours, it dropped like $1.50. Just like the stock market," Godwin said, recalling disbelieving e-mails he exchanged with buyers as the news spread from New England fish exchanges. "The whole European export market came to a screeching halt."
Now, "it's the market in general ... the institutional market, restaurants, cruise ships. People just aren't eating out," said professor Robert Bayer, director of the Lobster Institute at the University of Maine.
The industry has seen "nothing like this that I know of," said Bayer, a longtime lobster biologist. "I remember when I first started working on lobsters, the old lobstermen used to say prices followed the stock market: 'When the stock market's good, lobsters are good.' "
For consumers, this will mean a reappearance of bargain lobster promotions in supermarkets, Godwin said.
As for lobstermen, after seeing modest rises after the initial freeze-up, they saw prices drop again - and stay there.
Lobsterman Larry Knapp, who chairs Maine's state regional lobster council for waters around Boothbay, said they see prices as low as $2.40 to $2.60 a pound while reports from harbors farther Down East came in at $2.25 a pound - seriously threatening the ability of fishing families to make it through this winter in rural counties with little other work available.
The lobstermen are squeezed between low prices and the cost of diesel, said Marty Stillfusen, a former lobsterman who owns Red's Lobster Pot Restaurant in Point Pleasant Beach.
Among local lobstermen he buys from, "I had guys tie up in September," Stillfusen said. "They said, 'I can't afford to go at these prices. It would cost me money.' "
The restaurant's summer season runs through October, so Stillfusen saw the rapid impact of both the consumer pullback and lobster prices. "The economy is slow, and lobster is generally a reward-type of product. People are going to cut that first."

Public allowed to place beach chairs on priivate beaches at waters edge

Court agrees with Bubis

By NANCY SHIELDS
COASTAL MONMOUTH BUREAU

A state appellate court has ruled that an 85-year-old Loch Arbour resident does not have to keep moving but rather can sit in her beach chair on the public wet sand on the private beach across the street from her home.

Sophie Bubis has been in various stages of litigation for 13 years on public access issues after Jack and Joyce Kassin bought a former commercial beach club in 1995 to use for their family and friends.

Bubis had frequented that beach when it was part of the private community club. When she was cut off and forced to use the Loch Arbour municipal beach just to the north instead, she started fighting for access.

In the latest decision, the appellate panel ruled that Bubis was right when she sat in her beach chair near the water below the median high water mark on the Kassin beach one day in June 2004.

Kassin had her arrested that day.

Three years later, now retired Superior Court Judge Alexander Lehrer ruled the public had a right to use any of the state-owned land below the high-water mark for recreation but those activities were restricted to walking, fishing, surfing and resting for short periods.

Lehrer, however, did not allow Bubis to sit in her chair in the foreshore and sunbathe on the otherwise private beach.

But the appeals court, in a new opinion out this week, found that Lehrer erred in imposing significant limitations on the public's right to use the area below the mean high water mark.

"The appellate division got it right and correctly applied the Public Trust Doctrine to the foreshore of that beach," said Leonard Needle, Bubis' longtime attorney in the litigation. "Kassin's property does not include the foreshore, and he has no right to control activities of people in the foreshore."

The appeals court, on the other hand, also made it clear that the public did not have a right to any area of the Kassin's private beach land above the wet sand. Lehrer had given the public a six-foot-wide swath of sand above the high water mark to walk and do recreational activities, but again, not sit for any length of time.

The Kassins did not appeal Lehrer's decision on the extra six feet of dry sand, and the higher court said it would leave that part of Lehrer's ruling alone. Still the judges made it clear the public does not have a right to use the upland sand area if a private owner uses the beach for recreational uses rather than commercial reasons.

"All Sophie wanted to do was sit near the water in the wet sand in a beach chair," Needle said. "She wasn't asking to sit on the dry sand."

The judges noted that Bubis and the public can sit in a chair in the foreshore but cannot in any way block a private lifeguard's view if that prevents the guard from doing his or her job.

The court took issue with another aspect of Lehrer's ruling that no one could sit or rest in a 200-foot-wide area on the wet or dry sand directly in front of the private owners' cabana. The court struck that restriction down as it applied to the 200 feet in the foreshore where the court said the public cannot be restricted regardless if it is directly in front of a cabana.

"When he (Lehrer) did that, no resting in a 200-foot area, he violated my civil rights," Bubis said. "I have my rights and he violated (them)."

Loch Arbour is a tiny village. The Kassin beach or former commercial club has about 650 feet of frontage across the ocean. Loch Arbour's municipal beach just to the north has about 350 feet of frontage on the ocean.

The Kassins allow the municipal beach to use a 100-foot section at the northern end of the private beach on weekend days when the municipal beach is overcrowded.

In a recent appellate decision on another issue between the two parties, the judges said that Kassin had done enough in lowering sand berms he put up for privacy to give Bubis an ocean view from her home.

Asbury Park cops seek toy donations for needy

Asbury Park cops seek toy donations for needy

By NANCY SHIELDS
COASTAL MONMOUTH BUREAU

City police are seeking extra help this year from anyone who can give a new toy for a child, ranging from infants to 17-year-olds, in the annual Toys For Tots program.

Sgt. Connie Breech said the number of applications from families in need doubled this year, from 200 to 400, and donations are slim. The Asbury Park police program is in its 10th year.

"We're in a little of a crisis this year," Breech said Wednesday. "The need for toys and gifts is far exceeding the donations we've received so far. We're asking for extra help from anyone — from friends of Asbury Park."

New toys can be dropped off at the police station. Families who applied can pick up the toys the Saturday before Christmas and take them home to wrap them.

"These are the times when it's most important for communities to come together and support those most in need," City Manager Terence Reidy said. "This is a good way to demonstrate it. Any contribution made goes directly from you to a child."

Breech said if people prefer to send cash or a check to her at the police department, the address is 1 Municipal Plaza, Asbury Park, NJ 07712. A tax receipt is available for donations.

Jersey Central Power & Light is reporting widespread power outages tonight in most of Monmouth and parts of Ocean counties and the northwestern part of the state.

At least 50 municipalities in Monmouth and another 10 in Ocean County are
without power tonight.

A cause of the outage could be that a transformer blew in Neptune, impacting a grid, according to Asbury Park City Manager Terence Reidy.

He said that JCP&L told police that power should be restored within 45 minutes. JCP&L representatives could not be reached immediately, but according to its Web site, the massive outage includes more than 10,000 households in this area -- from Bayshore to the Waretown in Ocean County.

On Route 34 in Wall Township, street lights are dark and police have called on
personnel from Naval Weapons Station Earle to provide lighting from vehicles.

Widespread power outage hits Monmouth, Ocean counties

Widespread power outage hits Monmouth, Ocean counties
by The Star-Ledger Continuous New Desk

An outage has knocked out power to almost all of Monmouth County and parts of Ocean County, according to a spokesman for the utility company that serves the area.

In Ocean County, customers have lost service in parts of Lakewood, Toms River and Barnegat, according to the website for Jersey Central Power & Light.

"Calls are coming in like crazy," said Peter Johner, a spokesman for the utility.

So far, the outage has affected thousands of customers and shut down traffic lights on major roads including Route 36, just in time for rush hour, authorities said.

Johner said JCP&L is trying to determine the cause of the problem, but the scope of the outage suggests it is with the transmission and not distribution.

Further details about when power might be restored were not immediately available.

Hazlet police encouraged drivers who would normally take Route 36 to use local roads and said additional officers have been dispatched to monitor traffic.

Russell Holstein, a Long Branch psychologist, said he told his evening patients not to come in after he lost power in his office tonight.

"I can't work in the dark," he said.

Holstein, who lives in West Allenhurst, said he plans to take local roads home, avoiding backups on major thoroughfares where traffic lights have been disabled.

"When you get to a traffic light, that's where people get confused," he said. "I'm going to be very careful. I know where the lights are, and I'll be watching."

Holstein said he vividly remembers an outage several years ago that left his family without power for days. Still, he said, his family has taken no special precautions to prepare for this type of event.

"I'm like most people," he said. "We count on the electric company."

Mediterranean Diet Enriched With Nuts Cuts Heart Risks - olive oil debunked

Mediterranean Diet Enriched With Nuts Cuts Heart Risks

Mediterranean Diet Enriched With Nuts Cuts Heart Risks
Study says metabolic abnormalities better regulated when following this approach
Posted December 8, 2008

MONDAY, Dec. 8 (HealthDay News) -- In older adults at risk for heart disease, a Mediterranean diet plus daily servings of mixed nuts may help manage metabolic syndrome, according to a Spanish study.

Metabolic syndrome describes a group of health problems that includes abdominal obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and high glucose levels -- all of which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Previous research suggests that a Mediterranean diet -- which includes lots of cereals, vegetables, fruits and olive oil, moderate consumption of fish and alcohol, and low intake of dairy, meats and sweets -- lowers the risk of metabolic syndrome.

This new study included 1,224 people, ages 55 to 80, at high risk for cardiovascular disease. They were randomly assigned to one of three groups. The control group received advice on a low-fat diet while the other two groups received quarterly education about the Mediterranean diet. One of the Mediterranean diet groups received one liter per week of virgin olive oil, while the other group received 30 grams per day of mixed nuts.

At the start of the study, 61.4 percent of the participants met criteria for metabolic syndrome. After one year, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome decreased by 13.7 percent in the mixed nut group, by 6.7 percent in the olive oil group, and by 2 percent in the control group.

There were no weight changes in any of the groups over the one-year study period. But the number of people with large waist circumference, high triglycerides or high blood pressure significantly decreased in the Mediterranean diet/mixed nuts group compared with the control group. This suggests that the Mediterranean diet with mixed nuts improves certain features of metabolic syndrome, such as oxygen-related cell damage, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation, the researchers said.

"Traditionally, dietary patterns recommended for health have been low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets, which generally are not palatable. The results of the present study show that a non-energy-restricted traditional Mediterranean diet enriched with nuts, which is high in fat, high in unsaturated fat and palatable, is a useful tool in managing the metabolic syndrome," concluded Dr. Jordi Salas-Salvado, of the University of Rovira i Virgili, and colleagues.

The study was published Dec. 8 in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.
